Farewell to Norm

July 5, 2012 - Hawaii One of Norm’s wishes was to have his ashes brought to Hawai‘i. Since our April return from the family reunion in his honor, Jane and I have kept his ashes amongst our literary treasures on Hawaiiana. With his upcoming 91st birthday on July 5th, we thought that it would fitting to send Norm to that place where the Sea meets the Heavens. We have chosen Laupahoehoe Point here on the Big Island of Hawai‘i. So on that Thursday morning we will bid him farewell with a wish for fair winds and following seas…. The morning started out quite rainy- not unusual for this time of year. The Point is only about 15 minutes from our place and we could see the passing showers as they made their way across the water. By the time we arrived the rains had let up, so we walked the short distance to a protected cove. After a few minutes of quiet reflection, Jane and I spread Norm’s ashes on the water, followed by some bright flower from our garden. We bid him a farewell with a rousing “ On your way, Laddie! “ Just then the clouds parted and a big rainbow appeared in the mists. All in all it was a fitting conclusion to one part of the circle of life. Love, Kurt and Jane
