Baseball Stories (Giants,CYO)

Baseball Stories!! Love 'em. In 1963 Dad took us to Candlestick Park to see the Giants and Dodgers. I was 10. It was the middle of the summer, hot in Livermore, but in SF a cool, foggy day. It was Drysedale vs. Mariachal. Great game. Orlando Cepeda hit a homer, Maury Wills stole a base, and Willie Mays was magnificent I think the Giants won. What I remember most vividly is, after the game Norm took us around to watch the players come out of the locker room and onto the bus. They were now dressed in jacket and tie, just feet away, Wille Mays, Sandy Koufax, Maury Wills, etc... how exciting! Then Norm calls out to pitcher Johnny Padres of the Dodgers. Dad knew him from years ago in New York. He came over, shook our hands and signed our program. My 1st major league game and Im meeting one of the players! Wow. Earlier that spring , dad had coached my CYO baseball team. We were a very good team. 8-2 for the season and came in 2nd place. We won a big trophy and Norm got a photographer from the local paper to come to our school and take a picture of the team and our prize. The caption read "Team captain Bud Corbin holds trophy". A few years ago I visited St Michaels in Livermore and went into the office. They had a trophy case of various sporting triumphs over the years. Front and center and the largest trophy in the case was the one from our team in 1963! Friday night before each game Norm would sit down with me and write out the next days batting lineup and who would play which position. I told him years later i used this stategy as a bandleader when writing out the setlist of songs for the next gig. He got a kick out of that. Norm also coached Casey's team, and John and I were bat boys. More stories to come....!! Love, Miles
